Archeologists in Greenland have discovered what they believe to be Karlisaga. It is the only saga known to be written of a freed man or former slave. Until now it has only rarely been mentioned in other sagas. Some wondered if it even existed. Argument has been made that there was misunderstanding in the translations of these other sagas and that there was no saga of a freedman.
The mylar scroll was securely sealed within the rubble of a norse mound. The saga mentions Leif Arnarson and his viking raids in Ireland. On one particular raid he entered a large underground house where he was attacked by a man wielding a sword. He killed the man, took the sword and great riches.
Also mentioned are Ingolf Arnarson and his thralls, Vifil and Karli. Ingolf awarded Karli his freedom and the sword for his assistance in avenging the murder of his brother Hjorleif. (Sword-Leif; the name Leif was called after acquiring the sword as it was of great merit and earned Hjorleif many victories)
Much of the scroll is, as yet, untranslated, but there is also reference to Karli's great-grandson, Kozlov who supported Eirik the Red while he was outlawed and travelled with him to settle Greenland.
