Please bear in mind The Legend of Kozlov is still a work in progress. the following ideas are just the working story line and may change.
If you've read The Quest for the Black Dragon you will recognize the name of Bayfield's first and legendary King. I thought, for the next book I would go back in time. Five Hundred years to be exact. Of course, the past from the first novel is still the future considering true time. The Legend of Kozlov, or at least the first book takes place approximately one hundred and twenty years from today. We have a young man whose father is a great Lord and very close friend of a new King in the south. King Christian has gradually gathered smaller groups of people under him. The old idea of safety in numbers was the original purpose. After the demise of our modern world there is a time known as the Void. It is a time of chaos. There are no rules other than survive. The massive populations we now live with are killed of by nearly all ways a population can be killed off. The survivors are just that. Christian bands many small groups together and forms, eventually, a kingdom. Kozlov is a devoted and gifted soldier, but the King becomes jealous of this young man's notoriety. The notoriety is gained through his skill with the sword he was bequeathed from his grandfather. The King demands Kozlov surrender his sword to him which he does. The sword however, according to his grandfather, can only be wielded by a true Kozlov. Therefore when the king tries to use it the sword is very awkward and cumbersome. The King assumes Kozlov is mocking him or even worse that Kozlov has cursed him. He arranges, or rather, he bribes Kozlov's own soldiers to betray him in the next battle.
Kozlov's sworn swords, however, remain true to him and reveal the plot.
He escapes with his sworn swords and travels north to the untamed lands of Simcoe. When he is there he meets a young farm girl whom he cannot help but fall in love with.
On their wedding day she learns who he is and that he is responsible for tragedies of her own past. She calls off the wedding. He is desperate to prove himself to her. She agrees to forgive him if he can go to the Minesing Swamp and rescue her little sister who was lost their more than a year before.
