Despite all this, she was called Kathryn the black because of the assumed colour of her heart.
She was newly crowned Queen of Sitty which now included everything as far north as Bayfield. She was in her mid twenties and behaved like one in her mid teens.
If she caught a man gazing at her exceeding beauty she often had his sight removed. She had many methods.
The people were quick to avoid her gaze, but occasionally she would catch a man trying to hide a glimpse.
"Am I too hard to look upon? Am I not worthy of a glimpse from your precious eyes? Will you not look upon your Queen when she speaks?" All the while she would be toying with a loose strand of hair or caressing a bare and perfect shoulder.
"Am I too ugly to look upon?"
"No, my Queen! You are the most beautiful in the land!"
This answer, of course, would cost him his sight.
Very few ever guessed the correct answer.
"No, my Queen! I did not wish to offend my Great Queen by turning my worthless and ugly face toward her."
That's not to say se blinded someone every day or even every month. One just never knew when she might. So it was always safest to not be caught gazing. Needless to say, the people feared her greatly.
